BEHIND YOUR NUMBER

A little understanding
goes a long way.

What is Naismith’s rule?

Allow 1 hour for every 5 km, plus 1 hour for every 600 m of ascent. It was devised by Scottish mountaineer William Naismith in 1892.

What about going down?

Gentle descents are a little quicker, but steep descents slow you down. We add 10 minutes for every 300 m of steep descent.

Is this calculator for me?

It suits most healthy adults. Results are estimates. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant or are new to exercise, check with your GP before increasing your activity.
