BEHIND YOUR NUMBER

A little understanding
goes a long way.

How is this worked out?

We use the American College of Sports Medicine walking equation, which estimates oxygen use from speed and gradient. Each litre of oxygen burns about 5 kcal.

VO₂ = 0.1 × speed + 1.8 × speed × gradient + 3.5

What is 12-3-30?

A popular treadmill workout: 12% incline, 3 mph (4.8 km/h) for 30 minutes. It is a solid moderate-to-vigorous session without running.

Does it work for running?

The equation is for walking, roughly 3–7.5 km/h. Above that, use a running calculator.

Is this calculator for me?

It suits most healthy adults. Results are estimates. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant or are new to exercise, check with your GP before increasing your activity.
