A little understanding
goes a long way.
How do you simplify a ratio?
Find the biggest number that divides every part exactly (the greatest common factor) and divide each part by it. 12 : 8 ÷ 4 = 3 : 2.
What about decimals?
Multiply every part by 10, 100 or 1,000 until they are whole numbers, then simplify. 1.5 : 2 becomes 15 : 20, then 3 : 4.
How do I share an amount in a ratio?
Add the parts together, divide the amount by that total, then multiply by each part. £100 in the ratio 3 : 2 is £60 and £40.
Can I trust the answer?
Yes. These are exact calculations, rounded only for display. Change the number of decimal places under “Add more detail” if you need more precision.
