A little understanding
goes a long way.
What is the guild factor?
A multiplier of your weight that gives a sensible board volume for your level, from about 1.0 for beginners down to about 0.35 for experts. A 75 kg intermediate at 0.45 suits roughly 34 litres.
Volume (L) = weight (kg) × guild factor
Why does volume matter?
More volume floats you higher, so you paddle faster and catch waves more easily. Less volume makes a board easier to turn and duck-dive, but harder to paddle.
How accurate is this?
It gives a sensible starting point based on widely used formulas and sizing guides. Brands, conditions and personal preference vary, so treat it as a guide and check with a coach, fitter or specialist shop.
