A little understanding
goes a long way.
How is overtime worked out?
Hours above your contracted weekly hours are overtime. They are paid at your normal rate times the overtime multiplier, for example 1.5 for time and a half.
Pay = standard hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier
Do I have to be paid for overtime?
Not always. Overtime pay depends on your contract. But your average pay for all hours worked must not fall below the National Minimum Wage (£12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over from April 2026).
Is this my take-home pay?
No. This is gross pay before Income Tax, National Insurance and pension. Your payslip will be lower.
