A little understanding
goes a long way.
How is percentage change worked out?
Take the difference between the new and old values, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100.
% change = (New − Old) ÷ |Old| × 100
Why doesn’t a 20% rise and a 20% fall cancel out?
Because the second percentage applies to a different starting number. £100 up 20% is £120. £120 down 20% is £96, not £100.
Can I trust the answer?
Yes. These are exact calculations, rounded only for display. Change the number of decimal places under “Add more detail” if you need more precision.
