Conventional deadlifts train the back mainly through bracing and force transfer. They can strengthen spinal erectors and upper-back support, but rows and pulldowns remain necessary for complete back development.
Sumo deadlifts challenge the spinal erectors and upper back to transmit force while the torso stays organised. They support back strength but do not cover the rowing and pulldown functions needed for balanced development.
